We make sure residents feel special on their birthdays by facilitating Birthday Buddies. A volunteer selects a resident and either sends or delivers a card and small gift. This is a program we'd like to expand in the future so that if we do not have volunteers, we can do the shopping and sending ourselves.
We love to be a part of resident life! Any time we can help with parties or special events at the nursing home, we jump right in to have fun with residents and offer help to the staff. This is a super easy way to volunteer and to get connected with residents.
We received grant money to help two local nursing homes implement Music & Memory with some of their dementia residents. This has been a great way to facilitate relationships between residents and their loved ones, residents and their care givers, and residents and volunteers.
Sometimes we are asked to visit residents who are approaching the end of their life. This has been one of our greatest honors. Depending on the situation, we will visit the person and either pray, sing, chat, or sit quietly and hold their hand as they near the end. This is another area in which we'd like to expand our services as there are many nursing home residents who die alone.
Some residents can't leave their rooms. They can't come to church or a group activity. It's important not to leave them out! One on one visits are a great way to help residents feel special.
