This can be because they are the only surviving member of their family, or because their family lives too far away to visit. It can also be because they've been abandoned by their family.
In Kentucky, Medicaid recipients receive a $40 monthly allowance for things like hair cuts, snacks, toiletries, and anything "extra" a resident might like. This means that many residents often lack basic necessities, and certainly cannot enjoy things like getting the newspaper, going out of the facility for pleasure, or having a personal phone.
Is it any wonder? The statistics say half are depressed, but that number is probably drastically higher in reality. With no one to visit and little to look forward to, depression is a natural response to their lack of autonomy and relationships.

Do not cast me off in the time of old age, forsake me not when my strength is spent. Psalm 71:9
In the height of the pandemic, when we were not able to serve inside nursing homes, I created our Faith and Funnies newsletter as a way to minister to residents from the outside. The newsletter took off, and we got great feedback from both residents and activities directors. Part of the newsletter always includes a devotional that I write myself. Soon, folks started suggesting that I do more writing, including a book of devotionals. So the exciting news is....I am working on the book and I have started a personal blog as well. I'd be thrilled if you'd check out my personal blog, Shade Tree Stories.
